It focuses less on action and more on developing its large cast of characters, each quite different from the next. The Freebooters is a wonderful comic while it lasts. We are then introduced to The Freebooters as it was published in Storytellers. Readers are introduced to the same main characters, Axus and Aran, but both are somewhat different in their final incarnations. In Windsor-Smith's own words, "I felt strongly, and still do as it happens, that the publishing end of comics had been suckling from its own teat for decades. It was trying to stand against what the majority of comics had come to represent and avoid the publishing trends of its day. The Freebooters was part of an anthology in the mid-to-late '90s called Storytellers. The collection is structured first so the reader understands how Windsor-Smith approaches making comics and second so the reader gains some insight to comics beyond the typical action-packed, spandex offerings of today. ![]() Rather than attempt to judge the book solely on story and art, it is more logical to approach it in terms of what it is trying to do - enlighten the reader. ![]()
